The door unlocked with a click as Tyler inserted his key, swinging open to reveal the young man's dark form. With one arm, he reached over along the wall, his fingertips brushing against a switch. Flipping it on, Tyler winced at the sudden loss of darkness and accumulation of bright yellow light that his eyes had yet to adjust to. It was about ten thirty at night, and Tyler was just now returning from a long overtime shift bagging for Target. He set down a plastic bag containing a box onto his couch, flopping down next to it. The displacement in weight caused the thing to fall over, making a loud crackling noise. The man smiled, hearing the plastic bag rustle due to it being disturbed.
It was a long day, an early rise due to a co-worker, a young woman named Lisa calling in sick with the flu. Tyler was called by his boss to take her shift at about six fifteen in the morning, leaving him with only thirty minutes to get dressed and ready for the woman's six forty-five shift, the first of the day. He only had a sad looking egg sandwich a glass of orange juice to keep him going. Of course he had his break time when it was needed, but he was still on his feet for over eight hours.
After he'd been relieved of duty, finishing his shift so that he may return home, the young man passed by a new store that had opened up a few days ago. The door was opened up, smoke pouring out and misting around his feet. Must have been from a smoke machine, because the carbon exhaust had no scent of burning substances, and no heat or light of flames to go with the vapor. It was late enough already, so Tyler figured it would make no difference in his already messed up sleep schedule if he spent some time in the store.
It was dark inside, only blue lasers and dimly lit lights illuminated the walkway from the door to various shelves and then a young girl about sixteen with electric blue hair and emerald green eyes stood at the front desk manning the cash register. Well, she should have been. She was actually looking down at her phone that had a spider web of cracks on the screen. Goosebumps crawled along Tyler's skinny arms. Looking closer, he could see that the pupils in girl's green eyes were thin black slits. She must have really good eye contacts. She looked up and over to him, licking her pink pierced lips. "You need something?" She asked him, her eccentric eyes bored.
Caught staring, Tyler looked away, his cheeks flushing. "Um, no. I just, was looking around that's all." He looked over to the girl, reading her name tag. 'Jessica.' It read. Jessica shrugged, looking down at her cracked phone screen. Something else caught Tyler's eyes. Jessica sported some sort of leathery collar with silver splashes on it. It seemed to have the pattern of reptilian scales, and hazy blue undertones. Tyler wanted one just like it. It reminded him of dragons. The fierce, gorgeous mythical creatures had always claimed a spot as his favorite animals ever since he was a child. It mattered not to him if they weren't real. He still loved them. "Actually," he said getting the blue haired teen to look up from her phone. "Do you think that you still have a collar like that on the shelves still?" The girl smirked. "You have quite the taste. Of course we do. I'll bag one for you."
Tyler had returned home afterwards and he had plopped onto the couch, dead tired. His stomach growled, and he sighed, remembering only the egg sandwich he had. Pushing himself to his feet, Tyler almost literally dragged himself over to his kitchen, opening his refrigerator. It wasn’t all that full, so he made a mental note to use the next pay-check to buy groceries. He fished out some boxed enchiladas made from a party at his friend’s house the week before. Giving the box a quick sniff, he decided that they were still decent enough to eat, and he proceeded to microwave his meal. While waiting, Tyler picked up his bag, taking out his new collar that was purchased. It was a rich blue color, with pretty shiny scales that reflected the light. The inside of the collar had a soft fabric material. It was a little fluffy, and tickled when he ran his fingers along the soft material. The microwave beeped, signaling his food was ready.
Tyler sat at his table, chewing silently. It was about eleven fifteen now, and the young man could already feel the day’s fatigue weighing on his arms and legs. Swallowing a bit of enchilada, he let out a yawn. Best he get to bed now to avoid being too exhausted to stand when he went to work tomorrow. Cleaning up the mess he’d made preparing his dinner, Tyler picked up his collar then went to his room, turning the lights out on the way and flopping onto his bed. He stared at the collar, its azure scales cool against his fingers. He thought he should get to sleep, but then again, he hadn’t even tried it on yet! Sitting up, he slipped the collar around his neck, feeling his skin be tickled by the feathery fabric. It was comfortable. Really comfortable. He left his room, walking down the hallway over to his bathroom, flipped the lights on and peered into the mirror.
He didn’t look bad. The color really went well with his pale skin and matched his own blue hair. And it being comfortable made things all the more better. Great buy! Walking back to his room, Tyler felt a warmth in his chest. He had also missed his own pupils thinning into black slits when he left. Settling down to sleep, Tyler couldn’t shake off the growing warmth he felt. Oh well, he figured he’d deal with it tomorrow. It probably wasn’t even that serious.
Tyler woke up in a sweat. His body was on fire! He sat up, his shirt drenched in his body fluid. He felt as though he had swallowed flames, and they were burning the inside of his chest. Did he have heartburn? Maybe. That would explain the burning. He felt an intense searing pain in his abdomen, and felt the need to vomit. Or maybe those enchiladas were bad.  Whatever it was, the blue haired male stumbled out of bed, his sweaty toes cooling a bit as his feet touched the floor. Water. He had to drink some water. Maybe that would sooth some of the burning? He then remembered his collar. He’d fallen asleep with it! Reaching for his neck, his fingers only met flesh. But something was off. It felt harder, scaly even. He rushed to the bathroom.
“What the hell?!” Tyler’s lips quivered, and his hands shook as he stared at his reflection. His neck was blue. But not just blue, blue with scales. He ran his fingers down his throat, feeling his new skin. What was this? Maybe a fever dream? Probably. He turned the sink on, letting the cold water run into his hands. He brought them up to his face, splashing the liquid onto his face and began rubbing. He felt a sharp pain between his eyes. He slowly removed his hands, his vision adjusting to what he saw. Claws. His fingernails had turned to claws, and they had small red splotches of blood on them. Great. He just stabbed himself between his eyes. He felt it, so it couldn’t have been a dream.
Tyler stared at his reflection again, now noticing his thin slit pupils. What was happening to him? He saw the blue scales on his neck spread, going down his neck, back, shoulders and torso before covering everything, even his face. He was completely blue and scaly. “I’m turning into a monster!” He shrieked, running out of his bathroom. He felt his muscles rip, spasms of pain taking over his limbs. His once skinny arms and legs swelled, becoming muscular and toned. His rib cage expanded, his shoulders broadened. He then felt as though his spine was being yanked from his rear, and he moaning in pain. He heard ripping as his pants were shredded, a long tail growing from behind him. He felt his back swell as his shirt ripped as well, two giant leathery wings exploding forth from his shoulder blades, growing bigger and stronger by the second. His body parts were way out of proportion! He had two large wings, growing tree trunk sized legs and arms, yet his clawed feet, hands and torso was still dwarfed with is head.
That didn’t last long however, as his stomach, heart and lungs seared with heat, and his torso began to expand, his head also growing, his teeth sharpening and face pushing out into a muzzle. His clawed hands grew to the size of his head before the transformation, and Tyler could feel himself getting taller, larger, and more muscular. His stomach flipped. He felt sick, he felt as though he would vomit. And he did. However, it wasn’t halfway digested food that appeared on his floor. No, indeed bright scarlet and orange flames escaped his mouth, charring his floor. He coughed when he finished retching, smoke lifting from his widening nostrils. “F-fire..?” He whimpered, feeling the heat ease up a bit. He then realized what he was becoming. Not too much a monster, but in fact, a dragon! Joy and excitement replaced his fear, so much that he didn’t even flinch when his spine cracked and his skeletal build changed to that of a quadruped creature. He was becoming a dragon! Tyler saw his surroundings get smaller and smaller as his body grew up and outwards.
Shaking of his overwhelming surprise and elation, Tyler realized he needed to get out of his increasingly smaller confinements before he wouldn’t be able to get through the door. Even still, he reasoned at his current size now, he’d have some trouble. He decided to use the back door, less he scare the early rising neighbors suddenly transforming into a creature said to not have existed. His back door seemed smaller. Way smaller, so he wasted no time opening it up and squeezing out. As the tip of his tail left, Tyler could see the sun rising, orange and pink bleeding into the dark sky.
He grew taller, his shoulders gaining more muscles. His scales hardening into somewhat of a rich blue armor. His cyan hair fell from his scalp, the scales pushing the follicles out. Tyler watched a bit sadly as his precious locks fell at his feet. He just got it dyed too…. Oh well, who needs blue hair when you’re a blue dragon? Certainly not him. As he reached his final size, a few heads shorter than his house, the sun had risen halfway into the sky, the darkness gone and replaced by a light blue. The light was beautiful. His scales shimmered, sparkling better than any stupid vampire skin in any movie. Tyler felt tears prick his eye. He was a dragon. His favorite animal. It was a dream come true! He spread his large, beautiful wings, a nice cool breeze on his skin. He flapped them, listening to the wind and air whistling underneath his massive appendages. He took off, his neighborhood shrinking smaller and smaller as he flew higher and higher. The sunlight sparkled on his scales, and Tyler let out a mighty roar. The hell if the neighbors heard. They wouldn’t see him anyway. And he didn’t care. He was too high up into the sky, enjoying the wind as he flew off. Off into the sunrise, off to enjoy his new form.
Whew! This was actually fun to do. I enjoyed it more towards the end. I hope you like it Cuddletail!
